The best way to use a resume template, or sample resume, is as a starting point. Do not think of it as something engraved in stone. In other words, just because the template uses a Times New Roman font, that does not mean that you can not use your preferred Arial font. And, if the resume template includes an objectives section, but you prefer to have a summary section, feel free to make the adjustment. In fact, personalizing a resume template is advantageous. After all, nearly every resume template out there is available to every other job applicant out there, and it pays to stand out from the crowd. Just be sure to stay within the boundaries of what is appropriate when you personalize your resume. For example, while you can change the font, be sure to stick with a professional, resume-appropriate font choice. After reviewing a few options, choose the template that appeals to you the most. Part of the template selection process may involve deciding what type of resume you would like to have: functional, targeted, chronological, or some hybrid option. Once you have selected a template, add your information. Then, tweak and edit the document to personalize your resume, making sure it highlights your unique skills and abilities.
Potential employers are busy people. They have the time-consuming task of reading many applications and resumes before finally selecting the perfect person. When you have the task of looking through so many resumes, you are not only looking for those candidates that have the most experiences and best skills, you are also looking for, especially when applying for jobs in the creative industry, something memorable and unique. And that is where the design of your resume plays such a critical role in the application process. There are plenty of web-based services for creating a resume, and yes, the internet is chock full of free resume templates, but not many of those have been built with much creativity in mind. They certainly do not consider modern design trends, nor do they take into account the competitiveness of applying for a creative role. The free resume templates we have for you have all been created by designers for designers. They are all perfect templates for creating your own resume that will hopefully help you land your dream design job.
One type of job might want you to emphasize a specific area whereas another might ask you to elaborate on a totally different area and knowing which is which is critical to making sure your CV is perfect for your discipline. The best way to know what CV is right for your industry is to look at examples others have done. You can do this by either researching them online or by reaching out and talking to either your mentor or peers who are already employed where you are applying. Of course, as we tell you with every other example we give you here at The Interview Guys, these examples are only examples and you should make sure your CV is specific to you and not just a copy of what someone else has done. Remember, you are an individual and your CV should reflect that. With that being said, however, there are some common CV features you should keep in mind when writing yours.
